Here I go again, superimposing two images over each other ... but this is perhaps the piece in which it makes the most sense, considering the two main subjects are dead. And by dead, I mean ghosts. You know, because ghosts are known to be somewhat transparent.
For anyone interested in my process, this piece gives a good look behind the scenes. First, I painstakingly recreated the iconic Overlook Hotel carpet pattern, shape by shape in Adobe Illustrator, matching colors using stills of The Shining. Then I referenced more stills to digitally hand-paint the creepy Grady twins using a Wacom drawing tablet. For my signature silhouette/superimposition effect to work best, I must paint my subjects in a cutout/stencil style, using just one dark and one light tone. After the two main elements were ready (the pattern and twins), the fun part began: copying the merged shape pattern, perfecting colors, then pasting separately into the light and dark tones of the twins, matching placement exactly to the pixel so the pattern flows. After much trial and error, once I got an image I was happy with, I "flattened" the layers and added a uniform monochrome noise filter for texture. The whole process from start to finish for a piece in this style can take anywhere from one to three full work days. And that's how it's done, kids!
